Team Malizia combines offshore racing and ocean science to help better understand and protect our planet. Through Malizia 4 and Malizia Explorer, the team collects vital ocean data in some of the world’s most remote regions, contributing to climate research while demonstrating how science, communication and investment can drive ocean protection.

You Cannot Protect What You Cannot Measure

When training on an IMOCA 60, anything can happen in a split second. We were out on the water pushing Malizia 4 to her limits with the crew when the build up of high speeds and intense loads caused our mainsail to partially tear. Watch as the team springs into action to secure the sail, assess the damage, and make the repair and take the decision to turn back to base.

After a short refit following The Ocean Race Atlantic, Team Malizia’s new IMOCA Malizia 4 is back in the water in Lorient. With repairs completed and the boat ready to fly again, Boris Herrmann and the team are now turning their attention to two major challenges ahead: the Route du Rhum and The Ocean Race.

The Ocean Race Atlantic was the first time a race rule required every sailing crew onboard to be mixed gender, something that has already been part of our team setup for many years. It helps us challenge each other, find better solutions and perform as a team, on the water and on shore.

It starts with creating access to it.

Malizia 4 racing in The Ocean Race Atlantic

Team Malizia finished fourth in the inaugural edition of The Ocean Race Atlantic, marking the first race for the brand-new Malizia 4. Over eight days and 3,000 nautical miles of intense racing, the crew led by skipper Boris Herrmann overcame major foil damage, inevitable teething issues and some of the harshest conditions IMOCA boats have faced on recent transatlantic races. Fighting back to remain in contention until a nail-biting finish, Team Malizia crossed the line fourth, with four of the six boats arriving within less than 30 minutes of each other.

Team Malizia Finishes Fourth in Nail-Biting The Ocean Race Atlantic Sprint

With less than 600 miles to go in The Ocean Race Atlantic, Team Malizia remains firmly in the fight for victory. Malizia 4 is battling back after damage to its port foil, with just 25 miles separating the four leading boats as the race enters its final sprint.

The Ocean Race Atlantic | Day 8: Still Anyone’s Race

As the fleet closes in on Lorient, an intense battle is unfolding in the North Atlantic. With four boats still in contention for first place, including Malizia 4, everything remains possible. Despite sailing with a damaged foil ram that forces our most-used port foil to stay at a fixed angle, the Team Malizia crew is pushing the boat to its limits, fighting every mile alongside the other frontrunners. Here's how you can follow the thrilling final approach to the finish expected on Thursday afternoon.

How To Follow The Arrival Of The Ocean Race Atlantic

After seven days of racing across the Atlantic, The Ocean Race Atlantic is heading for an offshore restart. Team Malizia takes the northern route through the light winds, while Malizia 4 uses the slow conditions to repair its foil system and prepare for the next phase of the race.

The Ocean Race Atlantic | Day 7: The Masters of Suspense

After almost 1,900 miles of racing across the Atlantic, the fleet is heading into another major change in conditions. A large high-pressure bubble and lighter winds ahead could bring the four leading boats back together, giving Team Malizia another opportunity to close the gap.

The Ocean Race Atlantic | Day 6: Trying To Feel Human Again

Team Malizia faces a major turning point on Day 5 of The Ocean Race Atlantic as Malizia 4 battles back from a port foil impact and technical issues. Despite the challenges, the crew remains in the fight with the fleet facing another major shift in conditions.

Team Malizia faces another challenging day in The Ocean Race Atlantic as shifting winds and unpredictable clouds test the crew onboard Malizia 4. Despite the tricky conditions, the team stays in the fight and wins another Super Sprint, while the six IMOCA teams remain closely grouped in the race across the North Atlantic.

The Ocean Race Atlantic | Day 3: Dealing With The Clouds

Just 24 hours into The Ocean Race Atlantic, the six IMOCA teams remain tightly grouped as Malizia 4 leads the fleet east across the North Atlantic. After a strong start from the line, the crew spent their first night racing upwind through the Gulf Stream, before welcoming a spectacular sunrise as the new day began.

The inaugural edition of The Ocean Race Atlantic is underway. Team Malizia's crew, comprising skipper Boris Herrmann (GER), co-skippers Cole Brauer (USA), Justine Mettraux (SUI), Julien Villion (FRA), and onboard reporter Gauthier Lebec (FRA), made an excellent start, crossing the start line of the transatlantic sprint to Lorient, France, in first place.

The Ocean Race Atlantic route

Team Malizia has departed New York aboard Malizia 4 and is now heading offshore towards the start line of The Ocean Race Atlantic. Following the Sailors' Parade and Dock-Out Show, the crew, skippered by Boris Herrmann, sailed past the Statue of Liberty alongside the five other IMOCA teams under grey skies and light winds, as dedicated spectators lined the waterfront despite the rain to give the fleet a warm send-off. After making its way to the start line located approximately 100 nautical miles offshore, the fleet will officially begin racing on 2 September, setting course across the North Atlantic for Lorient, France.
